The Regulatory Need for Compliant Document Destruction

For banks, credit unions, lenders, investment firms, and other financial institutions, secure financial document shredding is not optional but a regulatory requirement. Federal and state laws require the proper disposal of sensitive consumer data to protect the public from identity theft, fraud, and financial loss.

Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), financial institutions must securely destroy any documents or electronic media containing personally identifiable financial information. This includes loan records, account statements, credit reports, and any other materials that could expose consumer data if handled improperly.

Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to:

  • Costly federal and state penalties
  • Civil liability and legal action
  • Damage to customer trust and brand reputation
  • Negative media attention
  • Failed compliance or internal audits

Viking Shred ensures your organization remains fully compliant with FACTA, GLBA, California privacy laws, and other financial-industry regulations. With NAID AAA-certified processes, on-site mobile shredding, and a fully documented chain of custody, we protect your institution from risk, from secure collection to your final Certificate of Destruction.

Viking Shred’s Electronic Media Destruction Services

Based in the Bay Area, Viking Shred is on a mission to help companies meet their ISO 9001 and 14001 objectives and divert 100% of waste from landfills. As an approved collector, we abide by all Federal and CalRecyle guidelines as we collect, sort, and ship your waste to metal recyclers, reuse organizations, and e-waste recycling facilities. We thoroughly check all waste for digital storage items, perform media shredding, and reduce them to any particle size required, from one inch to a few millimeters. This is to ensure that all data is securely destroyed before items are passed to the recycling facility. We can come to you in our shredding trucks or provide electronic off-site shredding services at our secure facility.

Recycling Services in California

CalRecycle is California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery. It is responsible for organizing recycling, waste reduction, and material reuse programs for both individuals and businesses or government entities across the state. Some of the most commonly recycled materials include plastics, metals, and glass. These can be deposited in personal bins for municipal pick up or brought straight to waste management facilities. However, CalRecycle also runs programs to help Californians recycle more difficult materials like tires, motor oil, and electronic waste. These items may need to be directly delivered to designated processing facilities. CalRecycle’s goal is to move California toward a fully circular economy, conserve natural beauty, and allow future generations to enjoy long, healthy lives.

Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program

The Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program was created by the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003. Under this program, retailers in California collect a fee from consumers at the point of sale for each covered electronic device, which helps cover the cost of proper electronic waste collection and recycling. Under the original legislation, covered electronic devices include cathode ray tube displays, LCD and LED displays, plasma televisions, and organic light-emitting diode displays. Approved collectors and recyclers are reimbursed for the CEW (covered electronic waste) they recover and recycle.
Around 6,000 computers in California, many of which are CEW, become obsolete each day. Yet, less than 15% of them are recycled. In fact, reports from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery show a year-over-year decrease in CEW recycling. Furthermore, there are only 19 approved recyclers in the entire state.
