On-site Electronic Shredding Services

Our on-site products and electronic media destruction service ensures the physical destruction of your prototypes, defective items, or excess inventory right at your location with a representative from your organization. We use industrial-level shredding trucks with CCTV cameras mounted on the side to ensure the entire shredding process is recorded.

Upon completion, we will provide you with a Certificate of Destruction (COD) as proof that your devices have been completely destroyed, eliminating potential data breaches or information leaks.

Off-site Electronic Shredding Services

Viking Shred also offers off-site electronic device shredding services, where we transport your items from your site to our trusted facility, where they are secured under lock and key. Our rigorous process ensures that all items are completely disposed of. Following the guidelines set by CalRecycle and the Federal authorities, we aggregate all shredded materials for recycling purposes. Approximately 95% of them are repurposed into everyday household products such as toilet paper, napkins, and paper plates. Our commitment to recycling reduces waste and promotes a sustainable approach to products and electronics shredding.

Senate Bill 1215 and Battery Recycling

Batteries pose some of the greatest risks to humans and the environment when disposed of improperly. Batteries power a wide range of consumer products and can either be embedded within the products themselves or removed and replaced. They contain corrosive and flammable chemicals that can injure sanitation workers during collection, start fires at waste and recycling facilities, and pollute water and soil. Batteries have long been considered hazardous waste and banned from landfills in California. Still, there was no standardized system for disposing of electronics with embedded batteries that could not easily be removed by household tools.

In September 2022, the California State Senate passed SB 1215, authored by Senator Josh Newman. This bill expanded California’s Covered Electronic Waste program to include battery-embedded products. Starting in 2025, CalRecycle will establish a process for CEW recycles to submit payment claims for these products and establish a recycling fee. Manufacturers will also have to list these products, and any qualified exemptions, in an annual notice to CalRecycle and California retailers.

Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program

The Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program was created by the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003. Under this program, retailers in California collect a fee from consumers at the point of sale for each covered electronic device, which helps cover the cost of proper electronic waste collection and recycling. Under the original legislation, covered electronic devices include cathode ray tube displays, LCD and LED displays, plasma televisions, and organic light-emitting diode displays. Approved collectors and recyclers are reimbursed for the CEW (covered electronic waste) they recover and recycle.

Around 6,000 computers in California, many of which are CEW, become obsolete each day. Yet, less than 15% of them are recycled. In fact, reports from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery show a year-over-year decrease in CEW recycling. Furthermore, there are only 19 approved recyclers in the entire state.

Environmental, Business, and Health Risks of Improper E-Waste Disposal
